Reptiles/Amphibians of the Wetlands Talk
Time:
6:30pm - 8:30pm
Description:
Bureau of Land Management Ecologist Mike Westphal will present Reptiles and Amphibians of Watsonville Wetlands. The wetlands and surrounding uplands on coastal terraces of the central Monterey Bay region support a number of interesting reptiles and amphibians. In addition to common species, including gopher snakes, kingsnakes, three species of garter snake, and treefrogs, the area also is home to several unusual, rare or endangered species, such as the California red-legged frog, California tiger salamander, Santa Cruz long-toed salamander, and California legless lizard. The presentation will include information on the natural history of all these species, how to identify them, the importance of wetlands to their survival, efforts to protect them, and anecdotes from twenty years of searching for these animals in the Watsonville area.
BLM Ecologist Mike Westphal has a Ph.D. in Zoology from Oregon State University, where he studied the genetics of garter snake color patterns. Prior to his graduate work, he was an active biologist on the central California coast for over two decades, holding positions with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
