Jessie Quinn, PhD student at UC Davis, is currently studying badger distribution and habitat preferences across California and behavior of captured and released badgers at Fort Ord. As of Dec. 2005, Jessie and her field assistents are tracking 9 badgers that have been captured and released on Fort Ord and fitted with radio transmitters that enable Jessie's crew to follow them across Fort Ord during all life stages such as pregnancy, with young in natal dens, weaned and dispersing juveniles, mating season, etc. Jessie has learned that Fort Ord badgers may dig 15-20 "hunting holes" per night and a new sleeping den almost every night. There is much to learn about Fort Ord badgers such as the main causes of their mortality, habitat preferences, home range sizes, etc. Interested volunteers can get a message to Jessie through the Bureau of Land Management by calling (831)394-8314. Viva los badgers!
